12 Step Recovery Process at Above It All Treatment

The 12-step method has been used in the battle against addiction since 1939 when it was originally established for Alcoholics Anonymous. It serves as a step-by-step guide for addicts and alcoholics on how to recover from their afflictions. This model has been successful for over 70 years because of its effectiveness in dealing with the underlying spiritual and psychological issues surrounding addiction.

Why Above It All Uses the 12 Step Recovery Process

The 12-step recovery process has been proven to help recovering addicts and alcoholics both in their initial treatments and as a tool that they can use in their sobriety to prevent temptations and relapse. Though the model does admit to submitting to a higher power, the steps supersede religious views and act as a continuing model for betterment and self-help.

The 12 Steps used in the program of Narcotics Anonymous are as follows:

  • Surrender – Admitting that we are powerless over the addiction – that our lives have become unmanageable.
  • Hope – Come to believe that a Power greater than ourselves can help restore us to sanity.
  • Commit – Make the decision to turn our will and our lives over to the Higher Power, as we understand that Higher Power.
  • Honesty – Make a searching and fearless inventory of ourselves – our strengths, our weaknesses, etc.
  • Truth – Admit to the Higher Power, ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  • Willingness – Be ready to completely hand over our defects of character to the Higher Power.
  • Humility – Humbly ask the Higher Power to remove our shortcomings.
  • Reflection – Make a list of all persons we have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.
  • Amendment – Make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others – understand that in doing so we may cause pain again.
  • Vigilance – Continue to reflect and take personal inventory, practicing honesty, humility, and admittance when we are wrong.
  • Atonement – In any way that suits one’s beliefs and spirituality, seek to become better connected to the Higher Power through meditation and/or prayer to improve our conscious contact with that Power – asking only for guidance and knowledge to understand the path we should take.
  • Service – Many before us have had this spiritual awakening and are experiencing recovery by walking these steps – understand this and practice these principles in all of our lives.

The steps are simple, but not easy and they require additional guidance and help from others to learn all that is truly entailed within each step. At Above It All Treatment, our clients will learn the 12-step recovery model in a group environment and get hands-on experience on how to implement these steps into everyday life.

Let the beauty of nature assist in your recovery.
